Effective date: 18 May 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Canada Green Burial ("we", "our", "this site") handles personal information for visitors to canadagreenburial.ca. We have written it in plain language because we believe privacy disclosures should be easy to read.
Canada Green Burial is an independent informational directory. We do not sell goods or services, do not run advertising, do not operate user accounts, and do not collect personal information for marketing purposes. What we do collect is described below.
The Law We Follow
This site is based in Canada and is governed primarily by the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), which is administered by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. We also acknowledge the substantially similar provincial privacy laws that apply to residents of Alberta (Personal Information Protection Act), British Columbia (Personal Information Protection Act), and Quebec (Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector, often called Law 25).
Where Quebec's Law 25 imposes a stricter standard than PIPEDA — for example, requiring opt-in consent for non-essential cookies — we aim to meet that stricter standard for all Canadian visitors.
What We Collect
We collect very little. Specifically:
- Google Analytics data. This site uses Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-E9J07BKM1V) to understand how many people visit, which pages they read, and how they arrive at the site. Google Analytics collects anonymised information about your visit, including your approximate location (typically city-level, derived from your IP address), the type of device and browser you are using, the pages you view, the time you spend on each page, and the website or search query that referred you here. This information is processed by Google and may be transferred to and stored on servers located in the United States.
- Standard server logs. Our hosting provider (Netlify) maintains standard server logs that record IP addresses, timestamps, and requested pages. These logs are used for operational and security purposes and are retained according to Netlify's own policies.
We do not collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses, payment information, or any other directly identifying personal information. We do not maintain a mailing list, newsletter, or contact form on this site.
Why We Collect It
Analytics data helps us understand which articles people find useful, which cemeteries in the directory are getting attention, and whether the site is working properly on different devices. We use it to improve the directory and the writing on the site. That is the only purpose.
We do not use analytics data for advertising, targeting, or profiling. We do not sell, rent, or share analytics data with any third party other than Google (the analytics provider itself).
Cookies
This site uses cookies set by Google Analytics. These cookies allow Google to recognise that you are the same visitor across page loads within a session. The cookies do not identify you personally — they identify your browser to Google's analytics infrastructure.
You can disable analytics cookies at any time using your browser's privacy settings, or by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. The site will continue to work normally with cookies disabled.
We do not use advertising cookies, social media tracking pixels, or third-party trackers beyond Google Analytics.
Your Rights Under Canadian Law
Under PIPEDA and the provincial privacy laws referenced above, you have specific rights regarding your personal information:
- The right to know what personal information an organisation holds about you and how it is used.
- The right to access any personal information held about you.
- The right to correct personal information that is inaccurate.
- The right to withdraw consent for the collection or use of your personal information.
- The right to file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca, or with your provincial privacy commissioner where applicable.
Because we collect very little information, and what we do collect (analytics data) is not directly tied to your identity, our ability to provide access or correction is limited. If you would like Google to stop collecting analytics data from your visit, the opt-out mechanism described above is the most effective remedy.
Third-Party Services
The Google Analytics data described above is processed by Google LLC, a United States company. Google maintains its own privacy practices, which are described at policies.google.com/privacy. By using this site, you acknowledge that analytics data about your visit may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy protections may differ from those in Canada.
Some pages on this site link out to external cemeteries, organisations, or resources. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those external sites. Please review their own privacy policies when you visit them.
How Long We Keep Information
Google Analytics retains visitor-level data for 14 months, after which it is automatically deleted. Aggregate, non-identifying statistics (for example, total page views per month) may be retained indefinitely. Server logs held by Netlify are retained according to their own data retention policies.
Children's Privacy
This site is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has somehow provided personal information to this site, please contact us using the address below and we will take appropriate steps.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or changes in the law. The "effective date" at the top of this page tells you when it was last revised. Significant changes will be noted on the site itself.
