What Is Green Burial?

The oldest form of burial. Rediscovered.

True green burial — also called natural burial — returns the body to the earth with as little intervention as possible. No embalming chemicals. No concrete vault. No steel casket. Just a simple shroud or plain biodegradable container, placed directly in the ground.

It is how humans were buried for thousands of years, and it remains the most ecologically sound choice available today. The body decomposes naturally, nourishing the soil and supporting the ecosystem around it.

In Canada, genuinely green burial sites are still rare. This directory exists to help families find them.

No Embalming

The body is never treated with formaldehyde or other preservative chemicals.

Direct Earth Burial

The body is placed directly into the ground — no outer vault or grave liner.

Shroud or Simple Container

Wrapped in natural linen, wool, or cotton — or a plain unfinished wood container.

Living Landscape

Graves are restored with native plants, wildflowers, and trees — not manicured lawns.
